Youth Services & SLP 2020 Workshop

Date: Tuesday, February 18, 2020
Time: 9:30am - 3:45pm
Location: EAA Aviation Museum, 3000 Poberezny Road, Oshkosh (map and directions)

9:30 - 10am — check in, light refreshments, and vote for Table Topics

10 - 11:45am — keynote presentation by Dennis Rockhill

A makerspace is an active and engaged place where elements of art, science, craft, engineering, theater, shop, and music intersect. In your library and community, they provide a “third place” option beyond the coffee shop. But their long-term relevance is an important question to consider. Is it a place of learning? What kind of learning is happening?

In this session, we’ll explore different aspects of makerspace activities and how they contribute to learning, playing, collaboration, and self-improvement. Get ready to activate your minds, your hearts, and your hands as we experience these discussions with hands-on activities.

At the conclusion of this engaging presentation, participants will be able to distinguish perspectives of makerspace initiatives and identify how they contribute to a young person’s personal growth and innovative team behaviors. After attending this workshop, you will return to your library with new ideas to incorporate simple STEAM learning challenges into activities you already provide for children and families, this summer and year-round.

Presenter: Dennis Rockhill is Makerspace Director at the Einstein Project in Green Bay. Prior to joining the Einstein Project team in Fall 2017, Dennis was co-founder of Proto, a youth-focused makerspace nonprofit. He has mentored Robotics and Lego League teams, and is an award-winning children's book author and illustrator.
