Schedule:

Co-facilitators Jeni Schomber, DPI Public Library Consultant, and Kelly Wochinske, Milwaukee Public Library, Public Area Service Manager – Education and Outreach, will introduce us to the Building Community Based Summers (BCBS) framework. Participants will be guided in small group discussions through two of the core topics of BCBS:

  1. The “Why” of Summer Services: When we define our purpose and really know who we are and what we want our summers to do for our communities, clear goals rise to the top.
  2. Letting Go of Tradition:  Reflect on how current decision-making is or is not supporting the foundations of equity-centered libraries and re-envision summer services with our “why” in mind
  • 12-1: Lunch – taco bar – or bring your own
  • 1-1:45: Two options
    • Mother Goose Rocks My Abs: Using music and motion in storytime and at home!

Get up and get ready to move! Cassie Payne will share some great ideas for music and movement using favorite interactive songs and activities. Great fun in or out of the library! Attendees will be invited to share their musical experiences with me and each other throughout the presentation. We want people to leave the workshop with energy to take on the day ahead of them!

    • Book Talk 101: Engage, Excite, and Empower Readers

As a librarian, you already understand stories—now it’s time to share that magic! Learn to create quick, compelling, and irresistible book talks that captivate your audience in under a minute. Whether or not you’ve read the book, you’ll learn the skills to confidently present a title and make it come alive. Then, explore how to turn book talking into a powerful tool for building strong, lifelong readers within your community, with a focus on outreach to schools. Walk away with practical tips, strategies, and a new enthusiasm for connecting readers with the stories they’ll love!

Terry Ehle is the Youth Services Coordinator at the Lester Public Library in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, and has spent 27 years championing young readers. She earned her MLIS from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and was named the Wisconsin Library Association’s 2024 Librarian of the Year. Each month she book talks over two hundred titles for 39 classrooms, though she’s still trying—unsuccessfully—to convince her director that reading them at work should count as “on duty.”
